When can you taste and smell Corona again?

Covid-19 loss of taste and smell is one of the most common problems faced by people who generally suffer from coronavirus disease. Symptoms such as shortness of breath, breathing, coughing, and high fever are seen in some patients with severe coronavirus and some with hereditary diseases.

However, with the recent emergence of different variants of the coronavirus, two-thirds of those infected with this disease have problems with smell and taste. In general, these smell and taste problems are more common in women than men. For some patients, smell and taste problems can actually be the only complaints about Covid-19 disease.

When can you taste and smell Corona (Covid-19) again?

Odor problems generally indicate upper respiratory infections. Accordingly, olfactory complaints begin on average on the 4th day of illness and last about 9 days and usually subside within a maximum of 1 month. However, sometimes you can find that odor and taste problems can persist for months.

When complaints last a long time, Covid-19 cases indicate serious brain and brainstem attitudes. In addition, the duration of odor and taste problems is directly related to the course of the disease.

If one looks at the mechanisms involved in the development of odor and taste disorders, it becomes apparent that this situation has not yet been clearly clarified. Recent studies have found that the virus that causes Covid-19 has a higher tendency to cling to the nasopharynx.

From an anatomical point of view, the olfactory nerve can also be viewed as an extension of the brain. The very thin and perforated bone between the nose and the brain goes through this structure and spreads into the nose. Therefore, when the SARS-CoV-2 virus reaches the upper respiratory tract, it can spread directly to the brain by attaching itself to the olfactory nerve.

If the loss of taste and smell does not last long;

  • It is very important to identify the coronavirus as soon as possible and start treating it.

  • Although the general ailments of the disease have been resolved with the use of blood thinners that prevent blood clotting, this should continue for a few more months.

  • The use of B-complex vitamins along with other vitamin and mineral supplements should always be recommended.

  • Mechanical nasal cleaning should also be performed frequently with saline or saline mixtures of similar density.

  • If the loss of taste and smell persists for a long time, a doctor should be consulted as soon as possible.
