How is the situation of the forest fires in Turkey?

Forest fires, which broke out in many different places simultaneously within the borders of Turkey on July 28, 2021, have been damaging our forests for about a week.

How is the situation of the forest fires in Turkey? We, as Tourwix Travel, will impart this series of fire to you objectively by using both national and international sources.

Where did the forest fires start in Turkey?

On July 28, 2021, fire alarms were heard frequently, especially from the coasts of the Aegean and the Mediterranean. The most destructive fire, the most difficult to fight and intervene due to the terrain conditions, was seen in the Manavgat district of Antalya. This forest fire, which broke out in the Manavgat region in Antalya, was brought under control within 2 days with great effort. In addition to the forest fires that broke out mainly in the Antalya region, around 175 large and small fires were observed in 5 cities and 15 different regions within one week.

The provinces with forest fires, with the exception of Antalya, are as follows;

  • Denizli
  • Mugla
  • Isparta
  • Aydin

We can say that all the fires that broke out through rapid relocations and interventions have been brought under control to this day and the cooling processes continue. But the panic is not over due to the government's allegations of sabotage.

What are the reasons for the rapid spread of forest fires in Turkey?

Especially in the summer months, such as early July and late August, it is normal for forest fires to occur frequently. In addition, it is normal to see such forest fires in a semi-arid climate like Turkey, where an average of 2.5 forest fires occur each year. However, the fact that these rather large and rapidly spreading forest fires occur simultaneously in many regions is reminiscent of the allegation of sabotage.

Claims of sabotage are made on social media from many different sources. Accordingly, the government's statements suggest that forest fires in Turkey may be due to climatic conditions as well as the possibility of sabotage or acts of terrorist organizations.

As a result, regardless of the cause of the fire, there are many negative factors that make it difficult to control and extinguish the fire by all means.

They are mainly

  • uneven area
  • High temperature
  • Low humidity
  • This is due, among other things, to the constant change in wind direction.

Consequences and current situation of forest fires in Turkey

To date, 8 people have lost their lives in forest fires that broke out on July 27th. Thousands of animals were killed and thousands of hectares of forest in the regions were hit by the flames. The only positive situation in the current situation is that the fires have been brought under control in all regions to date. After 3 very challenging days, all forests and settlements in the region have largely been brought under control and the controls will be continued within the framework of the necessary measures.
