Do you need a visa to enter the country?

To travel to Italy, Turkish citizens without a residence permit from an EU country need a passport, return flight ticket and a visa. Turkish citizens who have a valid residence permit in Germany may travel to Italy without a visa if:

  • You are traveling for tourist purposes and the stay does not exceed 90 days. A tourist purpose can be proven, for example, by booking a holiday home.
  • You are carrying a valid passport or identity card.
  • You can show a copy of your residence permit.
  • You have sufficient financial means to finance your stay.
  • You can show that you have accident and illness insurance that is valid in Italy.

Once you have all the documents together and, if necessary, applied for a visa, there is nothing standing in the way of your vacation in a holiday home in Italy.

The most beautiful travel destinations in Italy

However, before you book a holiday home in Italy, it makes sense to invest a little time in the planning. Which cities do you want to visit? Here are some of Italy's most beautiful travel destinations for inspiration.

Cities to visit in Italy

There are a number of impressive cities in Italy where you can experience Italian culture up close.

1. Rome

A visit to Italy's capital Rome is the dream of many travellers to Italy. Magnificent houses and palazzi, narrow and winding streets, lively squares and historical sights such as the Colosseum, St. Peter's Basilica or the Trevi Fountain tell the story of the lively metropolis. Nothing is more Italian than enjoying one of the best espressos in the world in one of the numerous cafés around Campo de' Fiori.

2. Venice

A trip to Venice is an absolute must for anyone wanting to experience romantic Bella Italia. Gondoliers manoeuvrer their gondolas through the city's canals, which are often spanned by bridges. Impressive churches, palazzi and squares right on the water take vacationers back to times long past. The Basilica di San Marco, St. Mark's Basilica, the Doge's Palace and the Rialto Bridge are particularly worth seeing. Another good time to visit Venice is the Venetian Carnival in February.

3. Florence

Florence is the capital of Tuscany and is known worldwide for a multitude of Renaissance art and architecture masterpieces. The Ponte Vecchio bridge, like the Piazza della Signoria or the Basilica Miniato al Monte, has been drawn or photographed countless times. Art lovers can admire works by Michelangelo in Florence's Galleria dell' Academia. The experience is rounded off by the Tuscan cuisine.

4. Positano

The town of Positano is less well-known, but no less worth seeing. Perched high on the cliffs above white sandy beaches, it offers a wonderful mix of art, culture, maritime flair, beach holidays and nightlife. If you want to holiday in Positano, you first have to climb a lot of stairs or wind your way up narrow serpentine streets through lemon groves. But travellers are rewarded with colourful houses, great restaurants and small boutiques. Positano is also the ideal starting point for hikes on the Amalfi Coast.

5. Naples

Romantic Naples is just two hours south of Rome, right by the sea. A trip there can therefore be perfectly combined with a holiday in Rome. The city is often referred to as an open-air museum, because there are historical monuments and statues around every corner. Just 9 kilometres from Naples is one of the active volcanoes on the German mainland, Mount Vesuvius.

6. Taormina

Taormina is ideal for a beach holiday on the Italian island of Sicily. Located on Mount Monte, it offers a fascinating panoramic view of the Etna volcano along the Mediterranean coast. The town is car-free and the starting point for many hiking trails that lead to the top of the volcano.

7. Milan

Italian fashion is known worldwide and Milan is the Italian fashion capital. Here you can shop in exclusive boutiques in the midst of historic buildings, marvel at the Milan Cathedral, which appears almost white in the sunlight, or plunge into the colourful nightlife.

Best travel time for Italy

The boot of Italy stretches from Switzerland down to the level of Greece. The temperatures vary accordingly and the best time to travel depends on where you want to go.

Overall, it can get very hot in the summer, especially in the south of Italy, and there are many tourists on the go. If you prefer to travel away from tourism and prefer moderate temperatures, the best time to travel to Italy is in spring or autumn. The high season starts in June and lasts until mid-September. But already in April the temperatures rise up to 18 degrees and in October it is still around 20 degrees on average.

If you want to travel to Italy from December to February, you can visit many regions that are not flooded with tourists at these times. Especially in the interior and in the south, the temperatures are very pleasant. In central Italy, the climate is very Mediterranean and from September to May you can get to know the country and its people with mild temperatures.

Anyone who likes winter sports anyway goes to the Dolomites or the Italian Alps to ski there.

Italy has something to offer for every type of holiday. You don't have to wait until next summer when the crowds flock to Italy.
