The story of Gobeklitepe

The excavations in Göbeklitepe began under the direction of the archaeologist Klaus Schmidt. The history of Göbeklitepe goes back to about 7,500 years before the Egyptian pyramids.

How old are its roots?

Especially if you are into and love history you will have a great time here.

You will find and see many symbols of life. Various icons, drawings, stones and various statues have attracted the attention of many archaeologists during the excavations.

Since it attracted the attention of archaeologists, the world of archeology got excited with each new work published, and it became the subject of much news. So over time it has become a historical legacy that welcomes visitors.

The Göbeklitepe discovery process

A farmer who was working in his field in 1983 found a carved stone. He reported this stone to the authorities, but it was not found to be special. Then in 1995 the Şanlıurfa Museum Directorate started excavations. Although it initially appeared like a normal excavation process, very important insights were gained over time.

Göbeklitepe is said to have been built in the Neolithic. Since the artifacts found are widespread and well preserved, those on the reliefs stand out. This region is called Mesopotamia. Mesopotamia is also known to have hosted many civilizations.

Can you imagine the experience of excavating in a place that has hosted so many civilizations? You are interested in it while reading and get excited to see this place in person. We strongly recommend that you make the Göbeklitepe trip as soon as possible and not postpone it any further.

When should you visit Göbeklitepe?

Göbeklitepe is literally an open air museum. That is why the weather conditions are important when traveling. In spring Göbeklitepe is much better than in summer, as Şanlıurfa has about 50 degrees in summer. In spring you will not be affected by the heat. We can say that the best month to travel is April.

If you want to visit Göbeklitepe, you should plan at least 2-3 hours. The excavations are still ongoing. We recommend that you eat first on the way to Gobeklitepe. Because there is currently no alternative to eating and drinking on site. So if you have eaten beforehand, you will be able to visit Göbeklitepe with a lot more energy.

At what time should you visit Göbeklitepe?

The opening times for Göbeklitepe differ in the summer and winter seasons. It is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in winter from October 31 to April 1. It is also open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the summer from April 1 to October 31.

Entry to Göbeklitepe is 36 TL. If you are a Turkish citizen and have a museum card, you can visit it for free twice a year. We would like to point out that with the museum card you can visit most museums for free.

Göbeklitepe- What will you see during your visit?

The excavations in Göbeklitepe began in 1995 and are still ongoing. There are temple ruins that are up to 30 meters high, sculptures that are likely human statues, and "T" -shaped obelisks from the Neolithic period. These stones are between 3-6 meters long. Their weight is between 40-60 tons. Animals, people and abstract beings can be seen on these stones. These were made by embossing or carving techniques.

The previous excavations have been6 locations uncovered. It is estimated that there are at least 15 venues. There are so many artifacts here that it will take an estimated 150 years to remove them all. We seem to hear you say that when they are all gone, you would like to see them all gone.

When you enter Göbeklitepe, there are animations at the entrance where you can find out more. We strongly encourage you to read this before entering. Finding out in advance will provide you with many conveniences when you travel.

The places here are divided into A, B, C and D. We encourage you to visit and see them all and observe these historical beauties.

Göbeklitepe: The oldest wheat center

Wheat is a very important crop. When we walk through the wheat fields we can feel this culture and experience. Inevitably, we feel good. If you have not yet visited any wheat fields, we recommend that you visit without waiting any longer.

Various studies have shown that wheat was grown for the first time in Göbeklitepe. It can't be a coincidence that wheat, a cultivated crop, grows in this place that has hosted hundreds of civilizations, can it?

This beautiful place was added to the tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage in 2011.

When you hear this you will forget everything you know

  • People started farming wheat growing. This first happened in Sanliurfa. Klaus Schmidt came to this conclusion in the light of the findings.
  • The floors in the temple ruins are impermeable to liquids. It is believed that the ceremonies were performed in the presence of liquid.
  • It has been established that the remains excavated at the archaeological sites are generally monumental.
  • In addition to architecture, stone tools also play an important role.

There is a lot of interesting information about Gobeklitepe. We think that in the course of the excavations you will find even more interesting information and insights.

Think of one place and imagine that with each relic unearthed, an important contribution to historical heritage is made, and that will last for 150 years. We are already very excited.
